The Blues have had an incredibly successful BUCs season this year, coming a close second to Warwick in our first match of the year and winning the next two matches! We are super happy to have qualified to compete in the BUCs regional match, taking place on the 19th of April.
It has also been a great year individually so far, with Blues rider Naomi Young winning all three matches, Alice McGonnell consistently placing in the top four at all matches and Hope Nicholson bagging a second place at her second ever match. Grace Haworth placed 5th in the first match and Charlotte Stuart placed 6th and 8th in the last two matches. Earlier on in the year, Alice McGonnell took part in the Student Derby, where she placed 3rd. She was the highest placed female jockey in this event. Looking ahead, after regionals, we’ll be competing in our annual Varsity match against Cambridge.

The 2s have had a fantastic BUCS season, coming second behind Cambridge 2s in their first match, picking up a fabulous win in their home match and another second behind Loughborough 2s in their final match. We have also seen some great individual results from the 2s - Beth Belcher came 4th and Tilly Mould 6th in their first match, Grace Haworth 1st, Tilly Mould 3rd and Samantha Weinerman 4th in their second match and Tilly Mould 6th in their third match. This is especially impressive as this was both Beth and Sam’s first ever BUCS season!
The 2s are now looking forward to the Varsity match against Cambridge in Trinity term, where they are determined to bring the 2s trophy home to Oxford! The blues have completed their last 2 mini league BUCS matches.
At Northampton they scooped team 2nd place with a good lot of individual placings. At Oxford Brookes they also got team 2nd place (by 3 penalities !!) and missed out on team regional qualification by a whisker. However, we had the two highest placed individuals in our mini league so two of our riders are off to regionals !! Our wonderful 2s team have had their first two matches of the season:
The first match was Cambridge's match where the team finished 3rd and individual 7th for Susie and 8th for Harriet 💙 Our second match was hosted by Harper Adams (pictured) where we took home the team win with an individual 2nd for Susie , Tilly 5th and Grace 6th. The BUCS season began with an absolute bang for our Blues team on Wednesday, who came in first place!! We are so, so proud of our riders who also clinched individual 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th place.
Huge thanks to the wonderful @hallplaceequestrian for hosting a brilliant match, and to our fantastic sponsors @roecklequestrian for providing us with THE most stunning gloves for the occasion. 3s- Our 3rd team won by 95.5 points with individual placings going of 1st going to Brook, 2nd to Lucie and 4th to Tilly. 2s- The 2nds lost by a very very narrow margin of 3.5 penalties but individual 1st went to Izzy, 2nd went to Alex and 4th went to Harriet. Blues- Our 1st team won by 73 penalties with individual 1st going to our captain Laura, 2nd going to Alice and 3rd going to Charlotte. We had such a fabulous day, and all the hardworking we had put in at training payed off. All three teams were absolutely incredible 🥰 A huge thanks must go to @kjturner85 at Hall Place (@hallplaceequestrian) as well as Warren @wbeattie our S+C coach without whom, none of this would have been possible @oxfordunisport. Also a shoutout to reserves Annie, Lucy and Maria who helped with writing and timing and without them the day wouldn't have run as smoothly, we love you!! Thank you also to @rebecca_bell8 and Adam who helped warm us up for dressage and were there to support all day. And a huge thanks to Houghton for hosting us, it was a very special day @musketeerevents ✨ This team is more than just a competitive uni team, it is a family and we are hugely proud of every single person who tried their absolute heart out and rose to the occasion. 🥇🏆 Thanks also to Rocekl for our Lona gloves that were blue with white trim. They are stunning and definitely gave the dark blues a winning advantage !! 💙 #roeckl #bleeddarkblue #roecklequestrian #roecklgloves #teamroeckl Our 1st team had a successful first two matches in their BUCS mini league in the first term back at university. Their first match at Cambridge saw them secure a team 2nd place with an individual 5th for captain Liv and 7th for Alice who put in an amazing performance at her first BUCS match. At their second match at Cherwell they secured a team win and an individual win for Liv, 5th for Ellen and 6th for Laura. Our 2nd team had their first match at Cardiff- a long drive! The team came 3rd but with only 6 penalties separating the top 3 teams it was very tight. Individually Susie came 5th and Harriet came 6th. Our second match was at home and we secured a team win and individually a win for Annie, 3rd for Susie, 4th for Harriet and 5th for Leila. We are looking forward to the last two matches of both teams' mini leagues, fingers crossed !! What an amazing Nationals debut for Oxford! With a team with less combined BUCS experience than some individual riders there we finished 5th in the country, with a very unlucky showjumping day for three team members (including a satnav error by Becca which sadly saw her eliminated) keeping us from a podium place. We did however become National Dressage Champions! With Becca coming 3rd individually and Liv 9th. Ellen overcame injury to step up to the team last minute, picking up 9th in the Showjumping, and Laura did a fantastic job on two difficult horses each day, only being knocked out in SJ by the eventual winner. A big learning curve but what a year!
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us this season: Hall Place for all the training, Summerhouse for some jumping tuning up, Oxford Uni Sport (especially Kyle, Mark, Frances and Dan) and everyone who is a part of OUEC for making it possible for the Blues to have such an incredible season. Also BUCS for running a very smooth Championships! A special thank you to our incredible Captain Amy Small, you were with us in spirit this week and we’ve had an unbelievable time with you this year ❤️ This year, a first for the club, thanks to the 2018-2019 captains Amy's hard work, varsity was held at Houghton International Horse Trials in Norfolk. Despite fabulous performances by the 2nds and 3rds we unfortunately lost to Cambridge. But a special mention to 2nds rider Harriet who won indivdually. For the 2nds, they lost by 6 penalties which shows how small the margin was and how tight a competition it was.
